Application Requirements and QoS Negotiation in Multimedia Systems

چکیده

The Quality of Service (QoS) concept is of central importance in the context of communication protocols for multimedia systems. Generally, multimedia systems comprise the following functional units: networks, end-to-end protocols, data management systems, applications, human-computer interfaces, and operating systems. Obviously, the entire system is influencing QoS that is visible to human users at the human computer interface. With respect to application requirements and QoS negotiation, this complex system has to be partitioned into two parts: (1) user, HCI, and application which determine application requirements; and (2) communication system, data management system, and operating system that realize a certain QoS. We propose a specification method for application requirements as a Vector Maximum Problem (VMP). Such specification enables the platform related part of the multimedia system to decide on resource usage. Thus, applications do not have to consider available resources, are independent of particular environments, and resource utilization can be optimized.

A Negotiation and Resource Reservation Protocol (NRP) for Distributed Multimedia Applications

Distributed multimedia applications require negotiation of quality of service (QoS) and resource reservation for distributed application parts and communication links. Negotiation of QoS is a balancing process between the QoS specified by a client, the resource availabilities of the distributed system and the functional capabilities of the distributed application. Negotiation requires applicati...

QoS Negotiation and Resource Reservation for Distributed Multimedia Applications

Distributed multimedia applications require negotiation of quality of service (QoS) and resource reservation for distributed application components and communication links. Negotiation of QoS for an application session is a balancing process between the QoS specified by a client, the resource capabilities of the distributed system and the functional capabilities of the distributed application. ...

Metadata Modeling for Quality of Service Management in Distributed Multimedia Systems1

In distributed multimedia systems, since multimedia objects are voluminous and unstructured, manipulation, transfer and visualization of such objects can require a lot of time and resources. It then becomes essential to prevent unsatisfactory information delivery. For that purpose, Quality of Service (QoS) management appears as an essential function supplied by distributed multimedia systems to...

On distributed multimedia presentational applications: functional and computational architecture and QoS negotiation

Approaches to a functional and a computational architecture for distributed multimedia presentational applications are developed. These approaches are illustrated by a case study, a multimedia news-on-demand service. The concept of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters is seen to determine the new characteristics of distributed multimedia applications. Accordingly the computational architecture f...

The QoS

Many networked multimedia applications are delay-sensitive, and require services with guarantees of resource availability and timeliness. For networks such as those based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), these service requirements are speciied through Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. QoS guarantees are needed at multiple layers in an end-to-end protocol architecture. Delivering end-to-e...
